VRE (Virginia Railway Express) Railroad Cars
In late 2007, the Society purchased four former Budd built RDC cars from Virginia Railway Express in Manassas, VA. One of these cars will be ready for the NRHS convention in Iowa in 2012. There is extensive work to be done on these car in order to make them Amtrak certified. These were formally self propelled RDC cars built for the Boston & Maine Railroad. At some point in the 1970's, their engines were removed and convereted to pure coach cars. They were aquired by Virginia Railway Express where they worked as Cafe cars on cummuter trains. They were retired in 2001 and sat on a siding for 5 years in Virginia. We aquired them in 2007, and in 2008, they were delivered. These cars need many upgrades. Some of the stuff include placing bathrooms in each car, holding tanks, water tanks, and etc. If you would like to help get the cars ready, please call Bill Conley at 304-544-7603.
